Mathematics & Scientific Principles

Before we dive into physics, we need to lay some groundwork. First, we must understand the core mathematical principles involved in physical laws; second, we need to understand the scientific process itself.


Mathematics is the language of physics. When scientists conduct experiments, they measure quantities and establish relationships between variables. To do this effectively, we need to understand:

  • What we measure
  • How we measure
  • How we represent values
  • How we analyze and establish relationships


Dimensions and Units

In order to develop models in physics, we have to take measurements. That means knowing both what to measure and how to measure it.

A dimension is a measurable physical quantity—such as mass, velocity, time, temperature, or force.

A unit is the standard reference used to express that quantity. For example, consider the dimension of length: we can measure it using a variety of units like metres, miles, inches, or even light years. Each dimension has an associated set of possible units.


This of course creates a problem: how can scientists compare experiments if they use different units? If one person measures a room in inches and another uses metres, they will get different numerical values. To solve this, scientists established an international standard set of units: the International System of Units (SI units).
