HR Diagram
When astronomers plot thousands of stars on a scatter graph comparing their luminosity (or absolute magnitude) against their surface temperature (or spectral type), a striking pattern emerges. Rather than being scattered randomly, stars group into distinct evolutionary regions.
Developed independently by Ejnar Hertzsprung and Henry Norris Russell in the early 20th century, the Hertzsprung-Russell (H-R) diagram is one of the most powerful tools in modern astrophysics. It reveals the fundamental life cycle of stars:
- The Main Sequence: The stable band where stars—including our Sun—spend around 90% of their lives fusing hydrogen into helium in their cores.
- Giants & Supergiants: Aging, highly luminous stars that have expanded after exhausting their core hydrogen.
- White Dwarfs: The hot, dense stellar remnants left behind after low-to-medium mass stars shed their outer layers.
