In the late 1896 Henri Becquerel placed a sample of uranium salts on to some wrapped photographic paper. To his surprise he discovered that it had been blackened, exposed.
He surmised that some radiation was coming off the uranium salts.
Pierre and Marie Curie, further investigating this "Becquerel radiation", discovered that certain materials emitted radiation. It was they that coined the term - radioactivity.
Persistent efforts by the Curies to isolate the source of this radiation culminated in the discovery of two new elements - Radium and Polonium.
In 1903, Henri Becquerel , along with Marie and Pierre Curie were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics
This began understanding of radioactivity spontaneous emission of particles and or energy from matter. The following videos starts by examining what radioactivity is, and then examines for physics underpinning it.
